With more than 30 years of technology experience that spans the military, academic world, business consulting, commerce, payments, and enterprise platforms and infrastructure, James Barrese has broad experience in digital transformations, strategy, ecommerce, financial systems, high performance processing systems, artificial intelligence, data, developer ecosystems, security, infrastructure, modern world-class engineering practices, data center and cloud operations, and developing innovative product solutions for consumers and businesses. James has pragmatic experience across all the domains needed for a large-scale technology-driven enterprise.
James served as a high-frequency communications specialist for the U.S. Army Signal Corp, spent time as a programmer at Stanford University, worked for Andersen Consulting, and then joined the e-philanthropy company Charitableway as vice president of engineering. In 2001, James joined eBay and led a number of strategic technology initiatives, including serving as the vice president in charge of delivering internal and external open platforms. Starting in 2011, James began serving as the chief technology officer for PayPal, including being the business leader for PayPal’s Payment Services business unit.
James earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Stanford University. He currently operates his consulting firm, Altos group, working as an independent strategic technology advisor. James advises a range of Fortune 500, mid-size, and early-stage companies. He also serves as a board member and works with founders and private equity firms across a number of industries.
